We look at the sock. Not your feet, not how you walk.

Accessibility

What we have built to WCAG 2.1 AA, how we checked it, and what is still not good enough.

EFFECTIVE 2026-09-05

1.The standard we work to

1.1Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.1, Level AA. We believe the site substantially conforms. Where it does not, section 4 says so.

2.The diagram

2.1The sock diagram is the main thing on this site, so it is the thing we were most careful with. Every zone on it is a real button: reachable by Tab, activated by Enter or Space, and announced with its reference and its name.

2.2The causes for each zone are text on the page, not a tooltip. They are readable without a pointer, without hovering, and by a screen reader in the ordinary reading order.

2.3Zones and causes are distinguished by a reference code, a label and a pattern as well as by colour. Nothing on this site is conveyed by colour alone.

2.4The diagram animates a sequence of annotations on load. It stops on any interaction, and it does not run at all where the browser reports a preference for reduced motion.

3.Contrast, type and motion

3.1Body text measures at least 4.5:1 against its background throughout. The measured ratios are recorded in a comment at the top of the stylesheet and can be reproduced by running the contrast script in the repository.

3.2One colour in the palette, a mid blue-grey used for ruled-out markers, measures 3.34:1 and therefore carries no text at all. The prose of a ruled-out cause is set in a lighter tone at 7.29:1, so that what has been ruled out is exactly as readable as what has not.

3.3Text resizes to 200% without loss of content or function, and the layout reflows to a single column at 320 CSS pixels without horizontal scrolling.

3.4Focus is always visible: a two-pixel marker in the signal colour, offset from the element, on every interactive thing on the site.

3.5A skip link is the first thing in the tab order on every page.

4.Where we fall short

4.1The uploaded photographs are yours, so we cannot write alternative text for them. We label the slots and describe what the reading found, which is the part that carries the meaning.

4.2The printed check list is designed for a sighted reader working through a shoe. The same content is on screen in the same order and is fully accessible there.

5.Telling us

5.1If something here does not work for you, write to support@bulwellhosiery.shop with "Accessibility" in the subject. We aim to reply within one working day and to fix rather than to explain.

5.2If you need a reading and cannot use the interface, describe the sock in an email and we will do it and write back. There is no charge for that.
