What the reading is, what it cannot be, and the line this service does not cross.
EFFECTIVE 2026-09-05
1.This is not a medical service and it has nothing to do with your feet
1.1Holetell looks at a sock. It makes no judgement about the health of nails or skin. It performs no gait, arch, foot-shape or pressure analysis. It never infers a walking style or any bodily condition from wear on a sock, and it has no means of doing so.
1.2A toenail appears in the reasoning in exactly one role: a hard object that may come into contact with the knit. That is a statement about an object touching fabric. It carries no implication about the nail, and nothing here should be read as one.
1.3The service accepts no photographs of feet, and no such upload facility exists. This is not a filter that could be relaxed. There are two upload slots, both for a sock, and there is no third.
1.4Anything concerning feet, nails or pain should go to a podiatrist or a doctor. If you describe something of that kind in the free-text field, the analysis stops there and you are told the same thing rather than being given a reading.
1.5The interface says the same thing permanently, in the header and in the workspace: we look at the sock, not your feet, not how you walk.
2.What the reading actually is
2.1The service infers likely sources of wear from where and how a sock has failed. This is not a test. Nothing is measured, nothing is diagnosed, and no result is produced that could be checked against a standard.
2.2Which shoes you wear these socks with, how far you walk in a day, how the pair is laundered and dried, and how long it has been in service are all unknown to us — and every one of them materially changes the conclusion. Each reading lists these out, on the page, under what this cannot know. That list is never obscured, on any plan.
2.3Treat a reading as a shortlist and a place to start looking, not as an answer. That is why every reading ends with something specific to go and check rather than with a verdict.
3.How the model is used, and what it is not allowed to do
3.1A vision model does two things: it locates the damage on the sock from your two photographs, and it describes the shape of the opening — thinned through, cut or split, or brittle and stiff. It also reports whether reinforcement is visible at the failed point and whether the surrounding surface is pilled.
3.2It does not rank the causes and it does not reach the conclusion. The ranking is computed from a fixed reference table held in this application, from the position, the break shape and what you told us about recurrence. The same inputs always produce the same reading.
3.3This division exists so that the reasoning can be inspected and argued with. A table can be shown to you; a model's impression cannot.
3.4Text that must be correct — the position labels, the zone references, the numbers — is drawn by the interface, not generated as part of an image.
3.5Your photographs and text are not used to train models.
4.Brands, products and quality
4.1The service evaluates no brand and reaches no conclusion about any product's quality. Brand names recognised in anything you write are masked before they are displayed anywhere.
4.2Where a reading refers to fibre characteristics — shorter fibres pill, and pilling carries thickness away — that is a neutral description of how a material behaves. It is not an allegation about any product, and it should not be repeated as one.
4.3The service recommends no footwear brand and no sock brand, and it will not be persuaded to.
4.4You may not use a reading as evidence in a return, a complaint or a quality claim against any brand. That prohibition is in the Terms and in the Acceptable Use Policy, and it is there because a reading is not evidence of a defect and was never built to serve as one.
5.The shoe
5.1Four of the five causes sit outside the sock, and most of those sit inside a shoe. The service still does not read shoes: it tells you which part of the shoe to look at, and what you would be looking for. What you find there is your judgement, not ours.
6.Uses that are not permitted
6.1Do not use this service, or anything it produces, for a medical, legal, financial, safety-critical, employment, credit, housing or judicial purpose, or to make or support a decision in any of those areas.
6.2Do not present a reading as an expert opinion, a laboratory result or a professional assessment. It is none of those.
7.Your rights are unaffected
7.1This notice explains the nature and the limits of what the service produces. It does not exclude or restrict any right you have under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 or any other law, and it could not: section 47 of that Act makes such a term not binding on you.
7.2Nothing in these terms affects your statutory rights.
7.3If a reading is wrong in a way that matters to you, tell us at support@bulwellhosiery.shop. Readings that turn out to be wrong are how the reference table gets better.
